Referee
Thank you for considering being a referee for RYAA Soccer. We will strive to make your experience with RYAA incredibly fun, successful and rewarding.
About RYAA
RYAA is a faith-based youth sports organization that seeks to develop the character, families, and faith of the communities of East Palo Alto and east Menlo Park. We do that by creating programs that allow children to learn and play a sport, while also learning about the Bible, faith in God, and good character. The key to the program is you, a caring adult that is willing to dedicate time and impart wisdom to the youth of our community.
Refereeing is Fun!
We will match your experience with an age group that needs a referee. Our teams have a broad range of ages and experience, so whether or not you have ever refereed before, or even played soccer before, we have a spot for you. Refereeing is a great way to learn the sport of soccer and get some exercise at the same time. It is also a great way for teenagers to serve the community.
To help you be successful, we will provide you with:
- Training materials,
- Equipment,
- A curriculum that will help you teach soccer, and also teach character using examples from modern sports, and the Bible,
- An orientation class to familiarize you with specifics of the RYAA league,
- Periodic on the field reviews to help you improve your skills.
Requirements
The things you need to be a referee in RYAA are:
- A positive attitude. We require that all comments to the children be positive and encouraging.
- Consistency. There is nothing worse than when children show up to a game, and there is no referee. Please make sure your schedule allows you to keep your commitments to being at the games.
- Willingness to pray with the children before each game, or recruit someone from either team to pray.
- You should be physically healthy enough that you can demonstrate simple soccer skills to the children.
- Experience refereeing, or playing soccer is helpful, but not required. If you have experience, we will give you games to referee that will match your experience.
Commitment
Estimated Weekly Time Commitment: 1 - 6 hours, depending on how much time you want to give each Saturday.
The fall soccer season begins in late August and ends the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Games are on Saturdays and last between 45 and 90 minutes, depending on the age. If you would like to referee your own children, we can arrange that, provided you are able to do so in an unbiased way. Each week, you will be given a schedule that will match your own time availability and the games available to referee.
All referees will be required to come to the coach orientation on August 26th.
