Coaching Soccer

Thank you for considering being a coach for RYAA Soccer. We will strive to make your experience with RYAA incredibly fun, successful and rewarding.

About RYAA

RYAA is a faith-based youth sports organization that seeks to develop the character, families, and faith of the communities of East Palo Alto and east Menlo Park. We do that by creating programs that allow children to learn and play a sport, while also learning about the Bible, faith in God, and good character. The key to the program is you, a caring adult that is willing to dedicate time and impart wisdom to the youth of our community.

Coaching is Fun!

We will match your experience and preferences with a team that needs you as a coach. Our teams have a broad range of ages and experience, so whether or not you have ever coached before, or even played soccer before, we have a team for you.

To help you be successful, we will provide you with:

  • A training class to teach you the basics of coaching soccer,
  • Training materials,
  • Equipment,
  • A curriculum that will help you teach soccer, and also teach character using examples from modern sports, and the Bible,
  • An orientation class to familiarize you with specifics of the RYAA league,
  • Periodic contact to see how things are going.

Requirements

The things you need to be a coach in RYAA are:

  • A positive attitude. We require that all comments to the children be positive and encouraging.
  • Consistency. There is nothing worse than when children show up to practice, but the coach is not there. Please make sure your schedule allows you to keep your commitments to being at practice and the games.
  • Willingness to teach children the Bible based character curriculum we provide, and a willingness to model a Godly attitude and lifestyle.
  • You should be physically healthy enough that you can demonstrate simple soccer skills to the children.
  • Experience coaching, or playing soccer is helpful, but not required.

Commitment

Estimated Weekly Time Commitment: 3 - 6 hours, depending on age group

The fall soccer season begins in late August and ends the Saturday before Thanksgiving. If you coach a team of 6 and 7 year olds, practice is every Wednesday at 5 pm at Cesar Chavez school. Older teams practice twice per week at different locations in the community. Games are on Saturdays and last between 45 and 90 minutes, depending on the age. If you would like to coach your own children, we can arrange that.

If you have never coached soccer, you will need to come to a soccer training class on August 17th and 18th. Also, all coaches will be required to come to the coach orientation on August 25th.
