Acterra was formed in 2000 by the merger of two of the region's most respected and effective environmental organizations: the Peninsula Conservation Center Foundation (founded in 1970) and Bay Area Action (formed in 1990). Our long history of innovation and partnership enables us to draw on the wisdom and experience of two generations of environmental leaders.

The Ennovationz Greenathon is a contest to engage Bay Area organizations in reducing energy consumption and lowering carbon emissions in our homes.

In the Greenathon, organizations compete against each other to engage members in home energy awareness. It also gives you a vital chance to track and verify the success of your energy-saving efforts if you opt to participate in an automated energy bill upload. Participation is completely free and the nonprofit with the most sign-ups by September 3, 2010 will win $10,000!

HOW ENNOVATIONZ HELPS PEOPLE SAVE ENERGY:
Ennovationz provides free energy-saving articles and links to available rebates, plus online tools to compare monthly energy usage to similar local homes. With the free phone consultations, they answer your questions and help you find your best energy-saving behaviors and products. Ennovationz can also refer you to vetted local professionals when you need an energy audit or a green home contractor to implement bigger changes.

GET STARTED!
To join the contest, simply follow these simple steps:
  1. Go to the Ennovationz website and click on the right-side orange "Sign Up" button. Create a user name and password and click on the orange "Sign Up" button

  2. Enter your home information and, if you want to enter your energy information later, click the "Finish Later" link at the bottom of the page

  3. Click on the "Groups" tab at the top of the page

  4. If the Acterra group is not immediately visible, sort groups from "A-Z." Once you locate the Acterra group, click the "Join Now" button

  5. Choose "Home 1" or, if you have a vacation house, "Home 2"

  6. Complete your home profile. If you want to have an analysis of your monthly bills, include your PG&E online account user name and password. If you don't have an on-line PG&E account, set up it up at thePG&E account set up page.  (Having an on-line account no longer requires that you turn off the paper bill.)

WHAT HAPPENS THEN?
The online dashboards provided by Ennovationz can track your energy bills automatically every month. You'll also have the chance to compare your energy use to other members of Acterra's group (anonymously, rolled up together).

You don't have to sign up for an automated bill download to participate and support Acterra -- but it's a great way to learn more about your energy-saving choices and compare your usage with others!

Acterra Information

Thank you! And thank you for your interest in saving energy and protecting our climate!

Earth Hour: Vote YES for the Earth
Saturday, March 28, 2009
8:30pm - 9:30pm

Saturday, March 28th, marks the world's first global election, between Earth and global warming.

For the first time in history, people of every age, nationality, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote. Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth - leaving them on is a vote for global warming.

The World Wildlife Fund is urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009. This meeting will determine official government policies to take action against global warming, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol. This Saturday is the chance for the people of the world to make their voices heard.

In addition to Acterra, local supporters of this effort include corporations such as Cisco (which is turning off all non-essential lighting that night), the cities of San Francisco, Mountain View, San Mateo, Millbrae, and San Leandro.  Among major US cities participating are Los Angeles, Miami, Philadelphia, Chicago and Washington, D.C. Around the world, lights will go off at the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Pyramids in Cairo, Egypt and at the Acropolis in Athens, among many other places.

Tell your friends -- and turn off the lights to enjoy the stars at 8:30 pm on Saturday!

For more information, please visit the Earth Hour website.

Help Acterra Win a $200K Grant!

As friends of Acterra, you know how we have been working for almost 40 years to protect our local environment.  We have now developed ACTerraGreen, a program that we can export to other communities!

We are within striking distance of getting a $200K grant -- and by tapping deep into all our networks, we have a good chance at winning this. Would you please sign up by clicking the following link, then clicking the "Support It" button?  You can also leave an optional comment, if you like.

www.justmeans.com/competitionidea/8143/promoteidea.html

Then, help us by sending the message below to your personal network so that they, too, can show their support!   March 21 is the deadline.

Many, many thanks!

PLEASE SEND THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE TO YOUR NETWORK

Dear Friends --

Acterra is a SF Peninsula organization with a great program -- and you can help take it to a larger scale.

Green Mountain Coffee Roasters is giving away $200K innovative programs that fight climate change.  Acterra needs people to "vote" for its innovative ACTerraGreen program that helps people save energy.

ACTerraGreen works with members of a group (like a PTA, faith group or workplace), providing them with short, easy "green" challenges during a six-month campaign. To address "Winter Heat," for example, they receive tips on using their thermostats, dressing up their windows to retain heat, installing weatherstripping, etc.  At the end of the month, they get a short anonymous on-line survey to check off what they did -- and the group's total energy savings are reported back to everyone.

Over the past two years, Acterra has worked with 3 school/parent groups, 6 churches/synagogues, one neighborhood, and most recently, 2 businesses, to provide this program to their members.  Acterra has also written a program manual and comprehensive website materials to help others start the program for themselves, and we are ready to take this to a larger audience.  Having $200K would make it possible to grow this program to an appropriate scale.

Please click onto the site below, and hit the "Support it" button for ACTerraGreen.  You can add a comment if you like, as well.

www.justmeans.com/competitionidea/8143/promoteidea.html

(The JustMeans site offering this competition has a standard policy about not sharing your e-mail with other third parties.)

If you'd like more info about ACTerraGreen, you can go to the Acterra website:

www.acterra.org/programs/acterragreen/index.html

Thank you VERY much for doing this.  The deadline is March 21, so please click and spread it around to your friends, too!

In this economic climate, you can imagine how hard it is for non-profits to raise money, so we are trying this creative new approach -- please help:
