A Modern Naturalist:
E. O. Wilson
Speaking at a Benefit Lecture for Canopy
May 10th, 2009
This Earth Day finds many of us feeling a renewed hope for our planet. Despite the myriad of challenges we face, we still have the ability to change our behavior toward the earth, influence the actions of others and lessen our impact.
On Mother's Day, Canopy welcomes a "father" of modern day science to talk about his views on the future of Mother Earth: Dr. E. O. Wilson. We take this opportunity to share with you more information on our remarkable guest--a naturalist for our time, a man with a hopeful vision for our future. |

"Each Species Is a Masterpiece"
A young boy with a passion for the natural world, it was an eye injury that made Ed Wilson turn to the wildlife that lay right at his feet, the world of insects. Intent on becoming an entomologist, Wilson began by collecting flies, but a WWII shortage of insect pins forced him to switch to ants, which could be stored in vials.
Wilson is now a legendary biologist, widely considered the father of the modern environmental movement. Wilson's theories have forced scholars to reassess their understanding of the natural world, he established a new scientific field, Sociobiology and his scientific ideas have been at the center of great controversy and acclaim, not unlike those of Charles Darwin.
Of his approach to his work, Wilson explains, "Perhaps the time has come to cease calling it the "environmentalist" view, as though it were a lobbying effort outside the mainstream of human activity, and to start calling it the real-world view."
A Professor of Biology at Harvard University, Dr. Wilson has received more than 75 awards recognizing his contributions to science and humanity, he has written more than 20 books, and over 400 articles. He is also the recipient of 27 honorary doctoral degrees from North America and Europe. His latest project, The Encyclopedia of Life website, catalogs information about all life on Earth--including data about every living species. "When you have seen one ant, one bird, one tree, you have not seen them all," once joked Wilson.
On Mother's Day, Dr. Wilson will deliver a plea for a new human ethic based on a wiser, more careful stewardship of our vanishing natural world. He will share his optimism that we still have an opportunity to save the living things and wild places that sustain us and give us hope for Mother Earth."Each species is a masterpiece, a creation assembled with extreme care and genius," he says.
