E. O. Wilson
Speaking at a Benefit Lecture for Canopy
May 10th, 2009

This Earth Day finds many of us feeling a renewed hope for our planet. Despite the myriad of challenges we face, we still have the ability to change our behavior toward the earth, influence the actions of others and lessen our impact.

On Mother's Day, Canopy welcomes a "father" of modern day science to talk about his views on the future of Mother Earth: Dr. E. O. Wilson. We take this opportunity to share with you more information on our remarkable guest--a naturalist for our time, a man with a hopeful vision for our future.

"Each Species Is a Masterpiece"
E. O. Wilson
A young boy with a passion for the natural world, it was an eye injury that made Ed Wilson turn to the wildlife that lay right at his feet, the world of insects. Intent on becoming an entomologist, Wilson began by collecting flies, but a WWII shortage of insect pins forced him to switch to ants, which could be stored in vials.

Wilson is now a legendary biologist, widely considered the father of the modern environmental movement. Wilson's theories have forced scholars to reassess their understanding of the natural world, he established a new scientific field, Sociobiology and his scientific ideas have been at the center of great controversy and acclaim, not unlike those of Charles Darwin.

Of his approach to his work, Wilson explains, "Perhaps the time has come to cease calling it the "environmentalist" view, as though it were a lobbying effort outside the mainstream of human activity, and to start calling it the real-world view."

A Professor of Biology at Harvard University, Dr. Wilson has received more than 75 awards recognizing his contributions to science and humanity, he has written more than 20 books, and over 400 articles. He is also the recipient of 27 honorary doctoral degrees from North America and Europe. His latest project, The Encyclopedia of Life website, catalogs information about all life on Earth--including data about every living species. "When you have seen one ant, one bird, one tree, you have not seen them all," once joked Wilson.

On Mother's Day, Dr. Wilson will deliver a plea for a new human ethic based on a wiser, more careful stewardship of our vanishing natural world. He will share his optimism that we still have an opportunity to save the living things and wild places that sustain us and give us hope for Mother Earth."Each species is a masterpiece, a creation assembled with extreme care and genius," he says.

Widely considered the father of the modern environmental movement, scientist E. O. Wilson shares insights on the race to save Mother Earth's dwindling biodiversity in a unique talk benefiting Canopy's Bay Area urban forestry work.

Named one of America's 25 Most Influential People by TIME magazine, and considered Darwin's "natural heir," Wilson comes to Palo Alto to share visionary ideas on environmentalism.

Donald Kennedy, President Emeritus of Stanford University, will chair the event and KQED's Forum host Michael Krasny will emcee the event.

Event proceeds will benefit Canopy's Trees for Schools and Kids program--engaging students in reforestation projects and tree care activities, science workshops and the creation of campus tree walks. A portion of ticket sales will also enable area students and educators to attend the event for free.

Trees For East Palo Alto Initiative

A major component of Canopy’s strategy in East Palo Alto is to work with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection to plant trees in East Palo Alto through the “Green Trees for the Golden State” planting program.

The Trees for East Palo Alto Initiative consists of the following comprehensive elements:

  • Plant 1,000 public trees before 2010
  • Provide three years of follow-up care
  • Engage and educate residents in the planting and care of community trees

Assist the City of East Palo Alto in creating a comprehensive municipal urban forestry program including tree protection regulation, planting plan, and inventory and management tools
