MARCUS SHELBY JAZZ QUARTET FEATURING MISS FAYE CAROL
PERFORMS A BENEFIT CONCERT
AT THE EASTSIDE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

On Friday, March 27, 2009, at 8:00 PM, a benefit concert performance to support the East Palo Alto Teen Home will feature the Bay Area renowned Marcus Shelby Jazz Quartet, with the dynamic Miss Faye Carol.  The Jazz group will perform music from Shelby’s oratorio tributes to Harriet Tubman and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement.  Shelby’s “Harriet Tubman” CD was recently recognized as one of the Best Albums of 2008 by the Village Voice national critics’ poll.  The album was also selected as one of the “Top 10” by a number of national critics.

Marcus Shelby has been playing the acoustic bass for 29 years. In this time, he has built a diverse and accomplished biography as a performer, composer and educator.  He is currently the Artistic Director and leader of The Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra, The Marcus Shelby Septet and the Marcus Shelby Trio, and is also active scoring music for film, theater and dance.

Faye Carol weaves the influences of jazz singers like Billie Holiday and Betty Carter and blues singers like Bessie Smith into her unique vocal tapestry. Faye has collaborated with such artists as Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, Albert King, Charles Brown, Bobby Hutcherson, Ben Vereen, Steve Turre, Billy Higgins, Pharaoh Sanders, Benny Green, John Handy, Gene Ammons, Eddie Cleanhead Vinson, Bluesman Johnny Hartsman, Smith Dobson, Martha Young, Vi Redd, Ed Kelly, Babatunde Lea, and many other formidable artists.

The East Palo Alto Teen Home is a California state licensed living program for teenagers and teenage mothers and their babies.  Established in 1992 to meet the needs of youth in crisis without safe homes, the organization serves youth in the San Francisco Bay Area counties and the California foster care system.  It helps youth to become contributing members of society by providing access to social, educational employment, and community service opportunities that exist within and outside of the East Palo Alto community.

Admission is $15 for youth and senior citizens; $20 for adults.  Tickets are on sale now.  For more information, contact Sheila George at (650) 324-8487.  The Eastside Performing Arts Center is located at 1041 Myrtle Street in East Palo Alto.  The doors will be open to the public at 7:00 PM.  This concert is a must-attend event!
