Helping the Homeless, Unhoused and At Risk

Location: Lord's Gym 1858-B Bay Road East Palo Alto
Date and Time: Thu, Oct 22, 2009 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM
Dear Friends of East Palo Alto,

East Palo Alto Community leaders and stakeholders have partnered with the County of San Mateo County Center on Homelessness Department to help the Homeless, Unhoused and At-Risk populations of East Palo Alto and eastern Menlo Park.  Never before has an event or outreach of this magnitude taken place in East Palo Alto.  The Center on Homelessness has provided leadership, resources and "know how" to bring this outreach into fruition.  We need your help with additional volunteers.

Attached are the EPA Connect Volunteer Registration Form, which can be distributed to all organizations, congregations, friends and family, and can be completed online or on paper. The completed forms can be emailed, faxed, or mailed to Tish Birkby at the number or address on the bottom of the form.  We will continue recruiting volunteers until we reach 65-70 people, so keep the form out there until you hear from us that we have met all the needs.

I have attached the necessary forms for distribution

The Confidentiality and Liability form will need to be completed by volunteers and brought with them the day of the event. They will be collected when the volunteers check in to get their T-shirts and assignments. We will have blank forms available on the day of the event for those volunteers who forget to bring their completed forms.

Tish can also be contacted at 802-7656 or tbirkby@smchsa.org,  at any time with questions or for additional information.

 Grace and Peace,

Activities

Sickle Cell Awareness Day

Sickle Cell Disease is the most common genetic blood disorder in people of color. It is passed on from generation to generation in a pattern of inheritance. Many people live in the dark about the diseases, and its impact on people of color. The disease affects:

  • 1 in 12 African Americans
  • 1 in 100 Hispanic Americans
  • 1 in 2 West Africans
  • 1 in 10 Caribbeans
  • 58,000 individuals in the Bay Area carry the Sickle Cell trait

With numbers like that, you cannot afford to live in ignorance.

The Problem

Educate Yourself. Know the difference between the Sickle Cell Trait, and the Sickle Cell Disease. Learn its effects, and its tratments. Join us September 13, 2008 at the Lord's Gym Community Center, located at 1840 Bay Rd, East Palo Alto.
