Jambo friends! Playing this Saturday

Location: Garden at House of Bigger Girls in East Palo Alto
Date and Time: Sat, Jul 31 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM

 Jambo friends!

Playing Saturday, July 31 in the garden at House of Bigger Girls in East Palo Alto:

Kenge Kenge - a nine member band on tour from Kenya!!!

Kenge Kenge (their name means "fusion of small, exhilarating instruments,") explore the origins of benga, a style popular in Kenya the way rumba is in Congo or highlife is in Nigeria.  This is roots music from the JoLuo community of Western Kenya, with lyrical arrangements that reflect influences from the popular Benga pop-music style. Dense textures of rhythm and chant are overlaid with an unusual assortment of self-made traditional instruments: Nyatiti lyre, Bul drums, the Nyangile sound box, Ongeng’o metal rings, Asili flute, and the Oporo horn. But the singing is in fact the central event, and it is strong and generous, full of character and contrast.
For more about the band, including audio & video, go to

Show starts  at 8 p.m.    Gate opens at 7 p.m. for socializing.  BYOB please.  Appetizers served.

RSVP required  to  Marilyn  houseofbiggergirls@yahoo.com   (650) 323 0334

Sliding scale  $10 to $25.   For this show, because the performers are many (9) and they
have come from afar, I am asking for generous donations.  Every dollar that comes in goes directly to the performers, always. Also I'm looking for "Angel Donors" to subsidize this cultural experience.  I'm thinking $100, but any amount appreciated. "Angel Donors" could hang out with the musicians, perhaps get a drum or dance lesson.  Please contact me with any other ideas.
