Founded in 1979, the Community Development Institute (CDI) has assisted more than 1,000 organizations throughout the country in improving governance and program delivery. CDI has provided leadership training to over 1,200 youth and serves as the fiscal sponsor for more than a dozen community-based Bay Area organizations.
CDI has four signature programs including: Empowerment Research!; Leadership Institute East Palo Alto, Leadership Training Academy, Nonprofit Incubator.
Our Mission
CDI's mission is to develop well-trained leaders and to support and nurture community-based organizations, public agencies, and businesses to promote community self-determination and sustainability.
Organizational Services: Secures, manages and evaluates technical assistance contracts to promote capacity building in communities of color. This team holds the primary responsibility of coordinating targeted interventions and contracts related to organizational effectiveness and community planning.
Education & Training: Conducts professional development programs for consultants and community practitioners, and improves capacity-building work in communities of color through training, networking and advocacy activities.
Community-Building: Develops and implements major initiatives and demonstration projects with the potential to improve social conditions; to promote racial equity and multicultural relations; to test new technical assistance methodologies; and to deepen our understanding of capacity-building work in communities of color
